2. Discovering Laberintus Park

Recently opened, Laberintus park hosts the biggest labyrinth in Spain! We visited for the first time as a family, with two little children and we all had lots of fun. The labyrinth is complex enough to be an entertaining walk to the middle, but not too difficult that you feel like giving up.

Throughout the labyrinth are native wild animals to be found and with each one are questions to be answered which you note down to discover a word which you can then hand in at the end to enter into a competition. Be prepared to get wet! There are some waterfalls throughout the maze providing a refreshing cool off as you duck underneath them. For those that truly don’t want to get there hair wet there is an alternative route around the water.

For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late afternoon, when the weather is cooler, especially in summer. The park is accessible for most visitors, though some areas may have uneven terrain. The park is only open on the weekends or during spanish school holiday periods.  Ticket prices are reasonable, and it’s advisable to check opening hours in advance, as they may vary seasonally.

Laberintus Park is a must-visit for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for a unique and immersive experience in Andalusia. Whether you love puzzles, art, or simply a peaceful walk in nature, this enchanting park is sure to leave a lasting impression.

3. Fuente de Piedra: The Flamingo Haven

Nestled in the heart of Andalusia, Fuente de Piedra Lake is the largest natural lagoon in Spain and a vital breeding ground for greater flamingos. This protected nature reserve is renowned for its shallow, saline waters, which create the perfect environment for thousands of flamingos to nest and raise their young each spring.

The best time to see flamingos in large numbers is from February to July, with peak nesting activity occurring in the spring.

During our recent visit in March there were thousands of flamingoes! More than we have seen for many years. We assume that this is due to the abundance of water, which after nearly a decade of drought comes as a true blessing. The flamingoes can be spotted across the lake, particularly in areas with higher water levels, often seen wading gracefully in flocks. Early mornings and late afternoons provide the best light for photography and birdwatching.

Beyond flamingos, the lake is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including herons, avocets, and kestrels. The surrounding wetlands and grasslands also support rabbits, foxes, and other small mammals, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

For visitors looking to explore, the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra Visitor Center offers insights into the area’s ecology and well-marked hiking trails. The Mirador de Cerro del Palo viewpoint provides breathtaking panoramic views of the lagoon and its wildlife.

4. Travel Tips & Recommendations

For the best experience, start your day early at Fuente de Piedra Lake, arriving before 10 AM to increase your chances of spotting flamingos up close. After enjoying the lagoon, head to Laberintus Park Mollina, just a 10-minute drive away, which opens at 10:30 AM. To avoid disappointment, it’s best to book tickets online in advance.

Pack binoculars for better flamingo viewing, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection, as both locations have limited shade. If you have a good camera, bring it along to capture stunning wildlife and artistic sculptures.

For a meal, consider bringing your own food and enjoying a picnic at the green space near Laberintus Park, which also has a large playground for kids. The park itself has a kiosk offering snacks and refreshments, but no full meals.

5. Conclusion

All in all we can highly recommend both days out, to the Fuente de Piedra Flamingo lake and the Laberintus Park in Mollina. Either to visit on separate occasions or to enjoy full day out and visit both attractions. If you need any assistance with planning your days out from Cortijo Los Lobos we are always happy to help, just talk to us on site, or message us before your holiday.
